The Collaboration-
For this special evening, Michelle and Danny will be joined by the stellar upright bass playing of Austin Janey, creating a powerhouse trio that bridges bluegrass virtuosity with vintage country soul, Appalachian tradition with rockabilly fire, and masterful musicianship with pure heart.
The combination of Danny’s award-winning mandolin, guitar, and fiddle work interwoven with Michelle’s soaring vocals and solid guitar, all anchored by Austin’s driving upright bass, is a promising showcase for lovers of tender ballads, traditional fiddle tunes, country, rockabilly, western swing, rhythm & blues, and jump blues.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of traditional music or just discovering the roots of American sound, we welcome you!
This performance is made possible by Flat Iron Crossroads’ commitment to bringing diverse, world-class performing arts to Eastern Virginia.

About Danny Knicely –
One of the most respected and versatile multi-instrumentalists of his generation, Danny Knicely has won countless awards for his virtuosity on mandolin, guitar, and fiddle – including first place in the mandolin contest at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. A musician’s musician, Danny has a chameleon-like ability to fit into any musical situation, and his prolific collaborations span from traditional Appalachian music to jazz, from bluegrass to global fusion projects.
Growing up in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley with a lifelong musical eclecticism sparked by childhood exposure to Django Reinhardt, Danny has become deeply revered not only for his instrumental mastery but also for his singing, flatfoot dancing, and his role as musical director for the Mountain Music Project. His work has taken him from the mountains of Nepal to folk festivals across America, always bringing authenticity, virtuosity, and pure joy to every performance.
About Michelle Belanger & the Mystery Hillbillies-
Michelle Belanger’s musical journey began at North Carolina’s traditional music festivals, where she discovered the authentic roots music that corporate Nashville had tried to erase. Through years of learning from Southern masters – including twelve invaluable years with the late guitarist John Worthington – Michelle has become one of North Carolina’s most passionate preservers of vintage American music.
Based in Winston-Salem, Michelle leads the Mystery Hillbillies, a rotating collective of kindred spirits dedicated to keeping alive the honest sounds of classic country, rockabilly, western swing, and early rhythm & blues. Drawing from the spirit of legends like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Bob Wills, and Wanda Jackson, the Mystery Hillbillies deliver music that’s not nostalgia – it’s cultural preservation performed with authenticity and fire.
