SUMMARY:Magnolia Boulevard
DESCRIPTION:$20/$25 \nBuy now \n\n\n  \nMagnolia Boulevard takes the Flat Iron Crossroads stage 11/15 with their signature blend of rock\, soul\, and Appalachian spirit. \nDoors open at 5:30pm\nShow starts at 6:30pm\nFood Truck: TBD\nIndoor / Outdoor Performance (Weather Permitting)\nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.\nWe are located at 7709 Flat Iron Rd\, Gloucester\, VA 23061 \nMagnolia Boulevard has blossomed through devastation since forming in 2017. In the beginning\, front-woman Maggie Noelle played in a bluegrass band\, although she’d been yearning for a creative outlet to let loose like her idols Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi. She met co-founder Ryan Allen and the vision was formed for a rock ‘n soul band tied to their Appalachian roots. Together\, they pushed through the turmoil of COVID-19 that devastated the music industry\, the sorrow following the death of their beloved drummer\, and the joys of welcoming Maggie’s daughter into the world. Much like the band members of Magnolia Boulevard have endured the highs and lows of the past few years\, so has their music. The band’s emphatic and empowering anthems of love\, self-discovery\, grief\, and uncertainty serve as a lesson to us all about life’s unpredictable nature and how to better live in the moment so we can appreciate everything and everyone around us before they’re gone. \nIn the seven years since\, Magnolia Boulevard has gone on to develop a close relationship with PRS Guitars Founder and CEO Paul Reed Smith (who helped to mix and master their 2024 EP Things Are Gonna Change) in addition to sharing stages with the likes of Blues Traveler\, George Porter Jr.\, Marcus King\, Neal Francis\, North Mississippi Allstars\, and Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. The group has also been recognized for their excellence\, winning the award for “Best Rock Band” at the Lexington Music Awards in 2018 and 2019 along with taking home first prize in the “On The Rise” band competition at Floydfest\, one of the east coast’s biggest music festivals\, in 2018. \nAlongside Ryan (keys\, vocals) and Maggie\, the other members include Roddy Puckett (bass\, vocals)\, Austin Lewis (lead guitar)\, and Brandon Johnson (drums). They’re spending 2025 releasing a new single every month\, culminating into a full-length album due out this fall. \n“All I can hope is that folks can relate to each song in their own way & can feel every ounce of love that we put into them. There’s nothing more that I’d personally like to accomplish with our music than to share space for people to bask in.” – Mag \n \nPlease note: Physical tickets are not distributed. Helms\, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Franklin County of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia\, grew up in an underground home built by his late father. Inspired at age 12 by the music played at his father’s funeral\, he taught himself guitar\, banjo\, and mandolin. By 16\, he was performing throughout the Appalachian region\, and by 18 had begun writing Tales of Misfortune\, his upcoming semi-autobiographical debut album on Photo Finish Records (January 2024). The record explores themes of loss\, perseverance\, and his journey toward becoming a touring musician\, with songs rooted in his mountain upbringing and personal story. He is managed by Dolphus Ramseur and booked by New Frontier Touring. \n \nKitchen Sink\nKitchen Sink is a North Carolina–based jamgrass band led by upright bassist Derek Lane. Blending bluegrass roots with funk\, psychedelic\, and improvisational influences\, they deliver high-energy shows filled with harmonies\, inventive arrangements\, and spontaneous jams. Known for making every performance feel like a family gathering\, the band has sold out a Billy Strings afterparty and shared the stage with bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs. True to their name\, Kitchen Sink throws in a little bit of everything—creating a sound that’s as unpredictable as it is unforgettable. \n \nLiam Purcell & Cane Mill Road\nHailing from Deep Gap\, NC\, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road blend bluegrass tradition with bold innovation\, earning praise from No Depression as “the future of bluegrass.” At just 23\, Purcell has already carved out a remarkable career—growing up near Doc Watson’s homeplace\, forming Cane Mill Road as a teen\, and leading the group to charting albums\, a devoted fanbase\, and the 2019 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year Award. \nA Berklee College of Music graduate and winner of the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships on mandolin\, banjo\, and guitar (the first ever to sweep multiple categories)\, Purcell continues to push stringband music forward. With their latest album Yellow Line on Pinecastle Records\, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road carry Appalachian roots into new territory—storytelling with authenticity while breaking boundaries of genre and style. Now based in Nashville\, Purcell tours nationally\, channeling his mountain upbringing into every performance. \n \n  \n\n\n$30/$35 \nBuy now \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Together for Susie: Music\, Love & Community Fundraiser at Flat Iron Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:With our help\, Susie can surpass her $16\,000 goal and begin the road to rebuilding. Let’s dance\, donate\, and show her that she is not alone. Together\, we can turn heartbreak into hope. \nOutdoor Event on Sunday\, September 28th from 3-6pm\nTickets: FREE\nFood Truck: Positive Pizza\nAll tips and donations will contribute to Susie’s GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/3aa7c1c70 \nThis fundraiser is more than just music and dancing – it’s our chance to support Susie Blythe\, a member of the Flat Iron Crossroads family\, as she rebuilds her life after losing her home to a fire. \nSusie has been coordinating our volunteer schedule and quietly giving her time and heart so others can enjoy the gift of live music. She is not someone who asks for help\, but today\, she needs the support of her community. With no insurance to cover her loss\, rebuilding will be a long and difficult road – one we can help make lighter. \nSo\, as a 501(c)3 Non-profit Performing Arts Center\, we’ve invited The Band from Misfit Beach to play from 3–6 PM on Sunday\, Sept. 28th. This incredible group of five retired locals started making music for fun\, but soon turned their talents into something bigger. Known for their motto “party for a purpose”\, they play for free at local venues\, allowing businesses to thrive while donating 100% of tips and earnings to causes in need. Their shows bring joy\, laughter\, and dancing – and their fanbase\, lovingly called “The Misfits\,” knows how to spread love wherever they go. \nNow\, they’re bringing that spirit to Susie’s cause.

DESCRIPTION:$25/$30 \nBuy now \n\n\n  \nFireside Collective has drawn on folk\, blues\, funk and a wide variety of bluegrass sounds to create a distinctive body of work that’s all their own. Keep scrolling for the full bio and a music video! \nThe show starts at 6:30pm on Saturday\, August 16th. The doors and food truck open at 5:30pm. To reach us message on Facebook or email info@flatironcrossroads.com. \n \nInspired by the burgeoning art scene\, close knit community\, and natural beauty of Asheville\, North Carolina\, newgrass turned eclectic jam band Fireside Collective has been spent a decade working towards this very pinnacle. \nOriginal band members Joe Cicero\, guitar\, Jesse Iaquinto (mandolin)\, Tommy Maher (resonator guitar) and Carson White (bass) began playing together in 2014 when Iaquinto gathered the group of bluegrass enthusiasts to back up some of his original songwriting. \nWhen they began touring again after covid\, Fireside drew inspiration from jambands like The Grateful Dead\, the group’s agreed upon North Star. There was significantly more improvisation\, changing setlists from night to night\, and longer musical movements. With the introduction of Michael Tillis on drums in late 2023\, the sound expanded to include heavy funk elements as well as classic rock and even ventured into techno and world music. \nBy the end of 2024\, Fireside Collective had become a true hybrid\, with a strong foundation in bluegrass and folk\, and healthy doses of rock n’ roll and funk\, all blended together in a unique and colorful amalgam of original music. \n“Depending on where you come from and your experience with folk music\, you may think we’re very traditional\, or on the other hand\, consider us a progressive act\,” says Iaquinto. \n  \n\n\n$25/$30 \nBuy now \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Good Shot Judy
DESCRIPTION:$20/$25 \nBuy now \n\n\n  \nThe Mid-Atlantic’s No. 1 high octane swing band\, Good Shot Judy is performing in Gloucester\, VA at Flat Iron Crossroads! \nThe show starts at 6:30pm. The doors and food truck open at 5:30pm. The show may be inside or outside depending on the forecast. \nFlat Iron Crossroads is a 501(c)3 non-profit performing arts center. Our team is 100% volunteer based\, join us! To reach us message on Facebook or email info@flatironcrossroads.com. \n \nIt’s hard to nail an exact moment when Good Shot Judy came to life. \nIt could have been when brothers Brett and Jeff Cahoon stepped away from the success they’d achieved with their punk band Ten Years from Now and chose instead to see what they could do with the old-time jazz standards they’d admired for so long. The brothers Cahoon formed a small combo\, and – wouldn’t you know it? – plenty of others felt the same groove. \nOr maybe it was when an inside joke made a name for itself. Their mother\, Judy Cahoon\, is an avid golfer\, and just as common as pars and birdies were three words of encouragement shouted by a supportive friend\, who pumped a fist and hollered across the fairway every time she took a swing: “Good shot\, Judy!” It became a funny family warble among the Cahoons – and as it turns out\, a solid band name\, too. \nOr perhaps that moment of creation arrived when Good Shot Judy freed their potential energy. Keen to give the classic melodies the respect and attention – as well as the power – that it deserved\, the Cahoons filled out Good Shot Judy with a full complement of horns\, percussion and vocals. And magic happened: an ensemble that was bigger than the sum of its parts. \nIn a sense\, Good Shot Judy was already in the stars long ago\, during those formative decades from the 1930s on\, when small jazz combos\, big brass bands and the crooners who sang on top of them were forging an enduring style and repertoire that would be written into the DNA of American music. \nBut really\, all these had a hand in making Good Shot Judy what is today: a big amp jazz band that sets stages aflame nationwide. \nAudiences may never consider that the Good Shot Judy show they’re seeing has been an evolution. They’re too captivated by the sound and spectacle of music that reaches through the time. They’re too caught up in performance that has one foot dancing in the past and one in the here and now. \nA Good Shot Judy show offers all those tunes you know just from growing up in American – songs you can at least hum along to\, if you don’t outright know most of the words. But the music itself is only part of the band’s allure; there’s something electric in the execution\, and it’s that vigor that carries the day as much as the pull of recognition. \nSo\, yeah\, there’s a history. And it’s a big one. Bigger than any one person. Bigger than any one band\, for that matter. But Good Shot Judy is as close as it comes to an intersection between an era’s defining sound and the pleasure of enjoying it the way it was meant to be heard. \n  \n\n\n$20/$25 \nBuy now \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Free Show with Ranford Almond
DESCRIPTION:FREE \nBuy now \n\n\n  \n\nJoin us in Gloucester\, VA on 7/5 to hear Ranford Almond\, a young singer/songwriter and troubadour that has begun to make his mark across the Southeast! For the holiday weekend\, this show is FREE to all guests. The show starts at 6:30pm. The doors and Get Cheesy food truck open at 5:30pm. The show is set to be outside – bring a lawn chair! No coolers\, cups or\, outside drinks\, please. \nAbout the Artist: \nBringing the soul from Greensboro\, North Carolina\, Ranford Almond is a young singer/songwriter and troubadour that has begun to make his mark across the Southeast. Raspy fresh vocals meet the Appalachian strings of Ranford’s guitar\, reminiscent of John Prine and Townes Van Zandt with his own unique stamp. Furthermore\, his talent extends far beyond composition and acoustic picking\, as he is a warrior on the electric as well. Ranford plays as a solo artist and leads a full band. \nRanford Almond’s forthcoming full length debut Old Soul is due to arrive in 2023 and demonstrates the evolution of Almond’s ability as he grows as both a writer\, arranger\, and player. The album\, recorded at Ovation Sound\, will feature a litany of nationally recognized guests\, as well as the tutelage of its producer\, Bill Stevens. \nIn addition to Almond’s studio explorations\, his live history is evident of his growth on stage. Spreading beyond its home of the Piedmont Triad\, it has begun to meet new stages and audiences. Festival appearances include Mountain Music Festival\, Shakori Hills\, The New River Gorge Festival\, The Big What?\, Trail Days\, The Casual Campout\, and more. Other notable stand alone plays include headlining the grand opening of The Flat Iron\, appearing under the lights on the big screen of Winston Salem’s Drive In\, a feature and headlining appearance of the North Carolina’s “Writer’s In The Round” series and its live counterpart Singers & Songbirds. As of Winter 2023\, Almond made his Colorado debut as a solo artist in Steamboat Springs\, following his prior guest appearances with Big Something in the region. \nRanford’s live collaborative projects link him to significant established talent as well. Red Panda is a six-piece unit that sees him join forces with the likes of Nick MacDaniels with whom he also shares a duo\, and Jesse Hensley\, both of Big Something. Ranford can be found fronting a trio with Daniel Yount (Super Yamba Band)\, and Seth Barden\, two staples of the New York City scene. \n“Mature. These days\, it is not a term commonly used to describe someone of Ranford Almond’s age. However\, young Ranford displays a maturity in his songwriting that belies his young 23 years of age. Throughout his journey of folksy tunes\, abundant with lyrical depth and emotional songwriting\, it can be easy for the listener to mistake these songs as those of a much more rugged and traveled character\, grizzled by years of burden and heartbreak.”\n-Ryan McBrayer\, The Jamwich \n \n  \n\n\nFREE \nBuy now \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Lord Nelson Band
DESCRIPTION:$20/$25 \nBuy now \n\n\n  \nLord Nelson is original rock and roll from the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Drawing on a past of camp fire sing a-longs\, barn parties\, metal thrashing\, and Unitarian hymnals\, Kai Crowe-Getty (guitar\, vocals)\, Bram Crowe-Getty (drums)\, Henry Jones (trombone\, vocals)\, Adam Wilson (bass)\, and Taylor Vactor (guitar) play music with a sense of tradition and belonging. \n \nAfter several years of touring the country\, playing clubs\, barns\, festivals\, and everything in between\, Lord Nelson set out to take a batch of road tested songs into the studio\, with a very simple goal in mind: make a record that sounds like a bar show. Using a converted barn to track the record\, guitarist Calloway Jones and collaborator Ivan Barry engineered two sessions across a few weeks\, and the bones of an album were fitted into a suit. \nWith two previous studio records under their belt\, the band were looking for a way to create a calling card for their boisterous live act\, something that would bridge the gap between studio and performance. For the first time\, this record features three writers and vocalists\, with brothers Henry and Calloway Jones contributing to Kai Crowe-Getty’s set of songs. Rounding out the group are Andrew Hollifield and Niko Cvetanovich on bass\, Johnny Stubblefield on drums\, and Dave Pinto on pedal steel and harmonica. The collection of songs by Kai Crowe-Gett\, marks a wide range of stories and characters\, but there is a creeping lightness that settles around the edges of what could be darker themes in other hands. From car crashes\, murder\, bank robberies\, devotion\, trucks in lakes\, drug busts\, and relationships\, to hope\, triumph\, and over coming the odds\, this record engages a wide view of the human experience. \nSeeking to move through recording quickly release the album so they could get back on the road\, those plans came to a sudden halt with the pandemic\, like the rest of the world. Does the world need this music now? Will it ever see the light of day? These were common thoughts over the preceding year. Finishing vocals in blanket forts\, tracking guitars in an old farm house\, and sending to friends to record parts enabled this process to grow and change slightly with the enforced break from touring. It allowed the band to pause and take in the songs and choices with a bit more thought. It changed the work and brought a reexamination. But ultimately\, this record intends to bring people together. Dance\, sing in the car\, hum under your breath\, crank up on the stereo\, don’t take life too seriously for a few minutes. This January\, Lord Nelson are finally ready to share their third full length album\, Transmission. Thanks for tuning in. \n  \n\n\n$20/$25 \nBuy now \n\n\n
